Why Am I Eating?

Discover the 9 Drivers That Shape Your Eating Habits

Most healthy eating advice focuses on what you’re eating.

But before changing what you eat, it helps to understand what’s driving the decision to eat.

Over the past 30 years, I’ve found that our eating is influenced by many different motivations. Hunger is only one of them.

When we understand why we’re eating, we can choose a response that truly nourishes us.

The Four Forces That Influence Our Eating

Biology

Our body influences eating through hunger, fullness, energy needs, hormones, sleep and health.

Psychology

Our thoughts, emotions, habits, beliefs, body image and stress influence our eating every day.

Sociology

Family, culture, work, friends, celebrations and the food around us all shape our eating.

Dietology

The food rules we’ve learnt through dieting, social media and nutrition advice influence what we think we should eat—even when those rules no longer serve us.

Within these four influences, I’ve identified nine common drivers that influence the food choices we make.

The 9 Drivers for Eating

1. Hunger

Your body needs nourishment.

Reflection:

Am I eating because I am physically hungry?

2. Health

You’re choosing food to support your health now or in the future.

Sometimes this motivation feels empowering.

Sometimes it becomes stressful if “healthy eating” turns into perfection.

Reflection:

Do my food choices support my health?

3. Ethics and Spirituality

Your values influence what you eat.

Perhaps you choose vegetarian meals, avoid food waste, support local farmers or your faith guides your food choices.

This is a beautiful driver because eating becomes about living consistently with your values.

Reflection:

Do my food choices reflect my beliefs?

4. Body Image

Many women eat because they want to change how they look.

Sometimes this creates motivation that may or may not last.

Other times it creates restriction, guilt, overeating and frustration.

Reflection:

Am I eating to care for my body, or to change it?

5. Food Knowledge and Skills

Sometimes eating is driven by what we know.

Or don’t know.

Confidence with meal planning, shopping, cooking and nutrition all influence our eating habits.

Reflection:

Do I understand which foods nourish me?

6. Preferences

Food should be enjoyable.

Taste, texture, smell, memories and favourite foods all influence our choices.

Rather than fighting preferences, we can learn how to work with them.

Reflection:

Are my preferred foods on my plate?

7. Pleasure

Eating is one of life’s pleasures.

Pleasure isn’t the problem.

Understanding when pleasure supports wellbeing—and when we’re looking to food for something else—is the important distinction.

Reflection:

Does my drive to eat for pleasure support my health and wellbeing?

8. Emotions and Stress

Food can comfort, distract, reward, soothe or simply provide a moment of relief.

Again, this isn’t a judgement.

It’s information.

Reflection:

Do I eat for non-hunger reasons?

9. Convenience

Busy lives influence eating.

Time, energy, availability, cost and routines all shape our food choices.

Convenience isn’t “being lazy.”

It’s one of the realities of modern life.

Reflection:

Do my convenient food choices truly nourish me?

One Eating Habit. Many Possible Drivers.

Imagine two women who eat chocolate every evening.

One is genuinely hungry because lunch didn’t keep her satisfied.

One is exhausted after caring for everyone else all day.

Another rewards herself for getting through work.

Another simply enjoys chocolate while watching television with her partner.

The behaviour looks the same.

The driver is different.

And if the driver is different, the solution needs to be different too.

What Does This Look Like in Everyday Life?

You might notice habits such as:

    • eating while preparing dinner
    • afternoon snacking
    • chocolate after dinner
    • biscuits with tea
    • eating when stressed
    • eating while watching television
    • finishing children’s leftovers

These are the habits.

The nine drivers help explain why they happen.
