Do you often feel like you’re always starting again with healthy eating?
If you’ve ever promised yourself, “I’ll start on Monday,” only to find yourself making the same promise the following week, you’re not alone.
Many women believe they struggle because they lack motivation or willpower. But often, the real barrier is all-or-nothing thinking.
This pattern convinces us that healthy eating has to be perfect. When life doesn’t go to plan—as it inevitably does—we feel like we’ve failed and decide to start over another day.
See how many of these statements sound familiar.
☐ 1. “I’ll start on Monday.”
You keep waiting for the perfect time to begin.
Whether it’s Monday, next month, after the holidays or when life feels less busy, healthy eating becomes something you’ll do later.
A gentle reflection:
What is one nourishing choice you could make today, even if it isn’t perfect?
☐ 2. “I’ve already blown it.”
One biscuit becomes a whole packet.
One takeaway becomes an entire weekend of eating differently than you intended.
One missed walk means giving up on movement for the week.
A gentle reflection:
Did one choice really undo all the other caring choices you’ve made?
☐ 3. “If I can’t do it properly, there’s no point.”
Healthy eating feels overwhelming because you think you need to prepare every meal from scratch, exercise every day and get everything right.
When it feels impossible, it’s easier not to start.
A gentle reflection:
What would “good enough” look like today?
☐ 4. You find yourself having “one last chance.”
You tell yourself the diet starts tomorrow…
…so tonight becomes the last chance to eat chocolate, chips, takeaway or dessert.
The promise of restriction actually makes those foods feel even more tempting.
A gentle reflection:
What if no foods were about to disappear tomorrow?
☐ 5. You keep trying to get “back on track.”
Every week feels like a fresh start.
Instead of building on what you’ve already learned, you feel like you’re beginning from the beginning again.
A gentle reflection:
What if you were never off track in the first place?
☐ 6. When your eating slips, everything else slips too.
You stop walking.
You stay up later.
You stop planning meals.
You stop making time for yourself.
Healthy eating becomes linked to every other healthy habit.
A gentle reflection:
What’s one small way you could care for yourself today—even if your eating hasn’t gone to plan?
☐ 7. You judge your day as either a success or a failure.
Good.
Bad.
On track.
Off track.
In control.
Out of control.
This way of thinking leaves very little room for learning.
A gentle reflection:
Instead of asking, “Did I get it right?” try asking,
“What did I notice today?”
That single question begins to replace judgement with curiosity.
What did you notice?
If you recognised yourself in several of these statements, please know there is nothing wrong with you.
These thoughts are incredibly common, especially after years of dieting, food rules and trying to rely on willpower.
The good news?
All-or-nothing thinking isn’t a personality trait.
It’s a pattern.
And patterns can change.
Healthy eating doesn’t begin when everything is organised, life is calm and you’ve found enough motivation.
It begins with your next nourishing choice.
