Valerie’s Story: Transforming Eating Habits Through Mindfulness

In a world where diet culture dominates the conversation around health, Valerie’s journey offers a refreshing perspective on mindful eating.

Her story is a testament to the power of finding balance and confidence in eating habits without obsessing over weight or succumbing to restrictive practices.

Through the Eating for You program, Valerie transformed her relationship with food and reclaimed her peace of mind, allowing her to enjoy life fully.

From Struggle to Confidence

Three years ago, Valerie completed the Foundations Mindful Eating Program having had a history of dieting and fluctuating weight.

Like many, she had tried multiple methods to manage her weight, but the results were short-lived and often accompanied by stress and guilt. However, she found that mindfulness offered a sustainable and liberating approach to food.

Valerie describes how the program made her feel “more confident and at ease with my body and my weight.”

This shift in perspective freed her from the constant worry about what she was eating or how much. Instead, she developed the ability to make choices based on what her body needed and learned to eat smaller portions mindfully.

The Mindful Approach to Eating

A critical change for Valerie was transitioning away from labelling foods as “good” or “bad.”

Instead, she learned to make choices that aligned with her health goals without deprivation or guilt.

For instance, while she occasionally has a biscuit, and if it turns out not to be the best choice, she no longer beats herself up about it. “I just move on and think, yep, I had that. Let’s do better next time,” she shared.

This approach extended to social situations where external pressures often lead to overeating.

Valerie now confidently chooses foods that suit her needs without succumbing to peer pressure or guilt. This confidence is an important achievement in her mindful eating journey.

Sustained Results

Before joining the program, Valerie had already achieved significant health goals, including losing 30 kilograms.

Over the past three years, she has successfully maintained this weight loss—a feat that eludes many.

Even when faced with challenges like a sore knee that limited her physical activity, her mindful eating habits allowed her to sustain her progress.

Valerie’s success highlights the program’s focus on sustainability.

By prioritising consistent eating habits and regular meal times, she created a routine that supports her health. For example, she ensures her evening meals are earlier to avoid going to bed on a full stomach, which has positively impacted her energy and sleep.

A Newfound Joy in Life

Perhaps the most profound outcome of Valerie’s journey is her newfound sense of happiness and ease.

“It’s a tremendous weight off my mind,” she said.

Without the constant stress of dieting and weight fluctuations, she can now enjoy life more fully.

She describes food as a “friend” rather than something she fights with, allowing her to focus on the activities and people she loves.

Travel, for instance, no longer causes anxiety.

Valerie recently enjoyed a trip to Queensland, eating out for nearly every meal without guilt.

Upon returning home, she seamlessly transitioned back to her regular eating habits, demonstrating the adaptability and resilience she’s developed.
