🌿 Self-Sabotage with Food?

A Gentle Checklist to Understand What’s Really Going On

Have you ever thought:

    • “Why do I keep doing this?”
    • “I know what healthy eating is… so why can’t I stick to it?”
    • “I feel like I’m sabotaging myself.”

If so, you’re not alone.

But what if it’s not self-sabotage at all?

What if your eating habits are actually trying to tell you something?

After working with women for over 30 years, I’ve never seen true self-sabotage with food—only patterns that haven’t yet been fully understood.

This checklist isn’t about fixing your eating.
It’s about helping you see it more clearly.

âś… A Different Kind of Checklist

(Not to judge yourself, but to understand yourself.)

As you read through, gently notice what resonates for you.

🍽️ 1. Do you eat well all day… then overeat at night?

If yes, consider:

    • Are you physically eating enough during the day?
    • Are you emotionally or mentally depleted by evening?
    • Does food feel like a reward at the end of the day?
    • Are you distracted while eating (e.g., by TV or phone), making it harder to feel satisfied?

👉 What looks like “loss of control” may actually be unmet needs catching up with you.

🔄 2. Do you start the week strong… but lose momentum by midweek?

If yes, reflect on:

    • Are your expectations too high or unrealistic?
    • Are you aiming for perfection rather than consistency?
    • Are you trying to follow rules that don’t fit your lifestyle?

👉 Losing momentum isn’t failure—it may be a sign that your approach isn’t sustainable.

⚖️ 3. Do you think, “I’ll be good”… then feel out of control?

If yes, ask yourself:

    • What does “being good” mean to you?
    • Are you restricting certain foods or food groups?
    • Does that restriction create pressure or tension around eating?

👉 Feeling out of control is often a response to restriction or internal pressure.

🍰 4. Do you fall into “all-or-nothing” thinking?

    • “I’ve blown it, so I may as well keep going.”
    • “I’ll start again tomorrow… or Monday.”

If yes, consider:

    • Are you labelling foods as “good” or “bad”?
    • Do you feel like one choice defines your entire day?

👉 This pattern keeps the cycle going—not because you lack willpower, but because the rules are too rigid.

🍫 5. Do you snack or eat when you’re not physically hungry?

If yes, gently explore:

    • Are you feeling stressed, overwhelmed, or tired?
    • Is food offering comfort, distraction, or relief?
    • Are you experiencing energy dips that trigger cravings?

👉 Eating without hunger is often serving a purpose, not working against you. But if this habit is no longer serving you, then perhaps it’s time for us to have a chat. Book a free call here.

🧠 6. Do you believe your problem is a lack of discipline?

If yes, pause here.

Ask yourself:

    • Have I tried being more disciplined before?
    • Did it work long-term?
    • Or did I find myself back in the same pattern?

👉 If the solution hasn’t worked before, it may not be the right long-term solution for you.

🔍 7. Are you focusing more on fixing your eating than understanding it?

    • Are you constantly looking for the “right” plan?
    • Trying new rules, diets, or strategies?
    • Hoping this time it will stick?

👉 If you’re not seeing the full picture… you can’t find the right solution.

🌱 Self-Sabotage with Food: A Gentle Reframe

What if:

    • Your eating habits aren’t the problem…
    • They’re actually the clues?

What looks like self-sabotage is often a pattern that makes sense—once you understand it.

And when you understand your patterns, you’re no longer stuck trying to control them.

You can start working with yourself, not against yourself.

đź’ Questions to Sit With

Rather than asking, “How do I fix this?”

Try asking:

    • What have I tried before that didn’t last?
    • What did I believe the problem was at the time?
    • What might I be missing?
    • Am I open to seeing this differently?

Take your time with these. There’s no rush.

đź’› Your New Starting Point

You’re not someone who self-sabotages.

You’re someone whose patterns haven’t been fully understood yet.

And that’s a very different place to begin.
